Mercedes Brandt | Artist Statement | 2019
A contour drawing is an artistic technique in which the artist sketches the outline of a subject resulting in a minimalist representation. Brandt uses the concept of contour, pushing boundaries by creating each piece with one continuous line. She does not look at her drawings until completion, making each work a blind contour. Her favorite part of saturating paper with ink is the reveal, everytime a greeting from an inspirational figure.
Brandt’s newest body of work explores the complexity of simplicity, defining subjects with a single stroke of ink. A balanced mix of abstract and representational characteristics gives the viewer just the right amount of information to recognize the figures, a somewhat cheeky nod by Brandt.
Brandt’s primary mediums are light, pixels and ink. She is a photographer, but also works in myriad other mediums. Brandt graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a BA in Graphic Technologies and then - because college is so cheap - she also received her technical degree from the Hawkeye Professional Photographer Program in portrait photography. After graduating in May 2017, Mercedes decided to leave Iowa behind for Minnesota to join her wife who was working toward her Ph.D. from mother Mayo. Since then, the two have moved and settled in the fabulous city of Madison, WI. Brandt is currently working as a professional photographer and visual artist throughout Wisconsin and beyond.
